If you're arrival from Chicago is on-time you shouldn't have any problem. Luggage should be checked through, when you arrive just walk from arrival gate to departure gate, no need to change terminals, deal with customs or hassle with TSA security checkpoint.

Take the train - u will see
Take the train - u will see the signs or u can ask at Info desk. You can check your luggage right at the exit of gate 1 "passengers in transit" after that take the train to Terminal 6.
You have to take AIRTRAIN

I am meeting friends on the delta flight from Heathrow this evening. Is there anywhere before security where I can hang out and get something to eat and drink. And where is the best place to meet them - outside the delta baggage hall?

Very tight if not impossible connection time! You will need to clear customs on arrival and that could take up to one hour, then transfer terminals (if necessary) for your ATL flight. Can you change to a later flight to ATL?
