I need your advice: I've booked a Finnair flight from Finland to JFK, it's supposed to arrive at 4pm on Saturday 08/27- do you think this flight will be canceled because if hurricane Irene? Should I change the flight for a later date and if so which one - monday, tuesday or?

Change it to Tuesday August 30th. According to The Weather Channel Hurricane Irene then will become extra tropical storm and will be present in Canada.

What happens if we can't shift it to a later day, should we cancel whole trip? My family will arrive also on Saturday around 3 pm from Turkey. It is a direct flight and the airline company cannot give a definite answer now. If JFK shuts down after the plane takes off from Turkey what would happen? Thank you for your reply in advance!

It is only one JFK_Specialist. If I was in your shoes I would change the date for Tuesday August 30th. Most likely flights both arriving and departing might be cancelled on Sunday due to hurricane Irene.
