Greetings from NYC. There is currently heavy snow falling in the area and although JFK airport is open, and the runways are currently operational (as of 10:15 pm eastern time on December 19), many airlines have canceled flights to and from the airport due to the storm. Therefore, please check with your airline before arriving at the airport.

My son is scheduled on a Aerosvit flight to Kiev on 12/20/09. We are driving to JFK from Baltimore at 10am. Not sure what to do if flight is cancelled. I have rental car for one day. Was told by airline to call their office at 9am. Anything can happen between 9am and when we reach the airport in the afternoon.

Right now it is snowing hard-this is expected to continue through Sunday morning. So far, no delays other than the usual 20 min on take off and landing, but there is a blizzard warning valid until 11am ny time on Sunday. My neice flies out to Kuwait at 9pm-also a long flight...we just have to wait and see-if I were you and there's no requirement postpone rather than face dissappointment

Catch your flight. The areas roads will be clear by then - and they clear the runways before they clear the roads.

If you are arriving after 5 P.M. Sunday (NY Time) the city will be beautifully covered in snow and totally open for visiting. Actually, consider yourself lucky - you get to see NYC Winter wonderland. Nothing quite like it.

Merry Christmas mate!

I am supposed to be on a flight from Sydney Australia to NYC leaving in about 24 hours. I only have 1 1/2 days when I get to NYC, then flying back to Sydney, so I'm very concerned about delays, cancellations etc as it might mean I don't even get a day in NYC. I am thinking of postponing for a week when weather is better. I'd be so grateful if you NYers could keep me posted re the weather and your thoughts re my catching the flight. Thanks.

Hi
I would postpone it if I was you. My parents were meant to be flying out of NYC tonight at 6.30pm. But the flight was eventually cancelled after they sat on the runway for 4 and a half hours! They don't know when they will get to fly home and apparently all those people (kids) included who don't have accommodation are sleeping at the airport on blankets. If I was you I would postpone your trip!
Good luck anyway!

HI
I would suggest you postpone your flight. My parents have just rung to let me know their flight tonight which was meant to depart at 6.30pm Sat 19 Dec was cancelled after they sat on the plane waiting to take off for over 4 hours. Luckily my parents have accom but apparently their are children and adults stranded at the airport with just blankets. They don't know when they may be flying home to OZ due to the storm.
Good luck with your travel plans - but if I was you I would avoid a trip to NYC in the next couple of days...

Aussie: I wouldnt take the chance, I'd reschedule the flight if I were you. Everyone is saying 6-10" of snow, I live in Brooklyn, 10 mins from JFK and I can tell you that we received more than the 6-10" of snow as they predicted. Some people who are stranded at the airports are having a difficult time finding departure flights back to their destination until after Christmas...why deal with the stress and headache?

Im going to las vegas from the uk on 30th december & have transfer at new york, and approx 2 hr wait till we get on the las vegas flight, does anyone know if at all possible there is any designated smoking areas that i will be allowed into or even outside to have a cigerette in between the 2 flights?

You will probably clear customs in NYC and be able to go outside to have a cigarette in between the flights. There is nowhere to smoke inside though, but I think you'll be able to go outside, so don't worry!
