JFK Airport Security & TSA Rules

Traveling through John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and wondering what you can bring through security? This guide explains the current TSA security rules at JFK, including the 3-1-1 liquids rule, carry-on items, medications, electronics, food, and what to expect at the security checkpoint.

JFK Airport Security and TSA Rules

Security screening at JFK Airport is conducted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). TSA rules apply to passengers and carry-on baggage before entering the secure area of the airport.

TSA rules can change, and individual items may require additional screening. The TSA officer at the checkpoint has the final decision on whether an item is permitted through security.

JFK Airport Liquids Rule

The TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule applies to most liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes carried through the security checkpoint in your carry-on bag.

Each container must hold 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less. These containers should generally fit in a single quart-sized, clear plastic bag.

If you have a larger quantity of a liquid that is not covered by an exception, place it in your checked baggage when possible.

What counts as a liquid?

For TSA screening purposes, liquids include more than just drinks. Common examples include:

  • Water and other beverages
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Toothpaste
  • Liquid soap
  • Lotion and creams
  • Perfume and cologne
  • Gel products
  • Liquid makeup
  • Sprays and aerosols
  • Other substances that can be poured, pumped, squeezed, or spread

If you are unsure whether an item qualifies as a liquid, check the TSA's current What Can I Bring? guidance before traveling.

How Much Liquid Can You Bring Through JFK Security?

For ordinary carry-on liquids, the limit is 3.4 ounces (100 ml) per container under the TSA 3-1-1 rule.

The important point is that the limit applies to the container size. A partially filled container that is larger than 3.4 ounces may still not qualify for the standard carry-on liquids allowance.

Do You Have to Remove Liquids at JFK Security?

Passengers should be prepared to remove their liquids bag from their carry-on when instructed by TSA officers.

Security procedures can vary depending on the checkpoint and screening technology being used. Always follow the instructions given by the TSA officer at the checkpoint.

Medications and Medical Liquids

Medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols are allowed in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces (100 ml) when reasonably necessary for the trip.

These items should be declared to the TSA officer at the beginning of the screening process and may receive additional screening.

Liquid medication does not have to fit inside the standard quart-sized liquids bag when it qualifies as medically necessary.

Breast Milk, Formula and Baby Food

Breast milk, infant formula, toddler drinks, and baby or toddler food can be carried in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces (100 ml). These items are treated as medically necessary liquids by TSA.

Tell the TSA officer at the beginning of screening if you are carrying these items in quantities greater than 3.4 ounces. They may be removed from your carry-on bag for separate screening.

Cooling accessories such as ice packs, freezer packs, and gel packs used with breast milk or formula are also permitted under TSA's special screening procedures.

Food and Drinks at JFK Security

Solid food is generally permitted through the security checkpoint, although some foods have special requirements.

Liquid or gel food items are subject to the TSA liquids rules. If a liquid or gel food exceeds 3.4 ounces (100 ml), it generally should be placed in checked baggage unless a specific exception applies.

Empty drink containers can be taken through the checkpoint and filled after security.

Electronics at JFK Security

TSA may require electronic devices to undergo additional screening. Officers may also ask you to power on an electronic device.

Make sure your devices have enough battery power to turn on if requested. TSA states that a device that cannot be powered on may not be permitted through the security checkpoint.

Follow the instructions of the TSA officer regarding laptops, tablets, cameras, and other electronic devices because screening procedures can vary by checkpoint.

Shoes and Security Screening

Passengers may be required to remove shoes during standard TSA screening. Screening procedures can vary depending on the passenger's eligibility and the security checkpoint.

TSA recommends practical footwear that can be removed and replaced easily when traveling through security.

TSA PreCheck at JFK

Passengers enrolled in TSA PreCheck generally have a different screening process from standard TSA screening.

Eligible TSA PreCheck passengers generally do not need to remove shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops, or the standard 3-1-1 liquids bag during the normal PreCheck screening process.

However, TSA can still conduct additional screening when necessary.

What to Expect at JFK Airport Security

Before approaching the security checkpoint, organize your carry-on baggage and remove prohibited items.

Have your required identification and travel documents ready and follow the instructions displayed at the checkpoint.

TSA recommends keeping carry-on bags organized because clutter can make X-ray screening more difficult and may result in additional inspection.

If an item causes an alarm, appears to have been tampered with, or raises another security concern, TSA may conduct additional screening or determine that the item cannot pass through the checkpoint.

JFK Airport TSA Security FAQ

An empty water bottle can generally pass through the security checkpoint. You can fill it after passing through security. A filled bottle is subject to the TSA liquids rules.

Where can I check whether a specific item is allowed?

The most reliable source is the TSA's official What Can I Bring? database. It contains current guidance for hundreds of individual items.

maybe you ve already taken the plane, so this wont be of much use.
Yes you are allowed to take your birth control within the aircraft.
if you bring a body lotion or a cream you have to put it in a plastic bag.

My father's going to travelling from N.Y. to Santiago of Chile, and he is carring a new stainless steel shower arm 24" long by 3" width, and is hollow. Is there any problem to pass the security with that inside the luggage? or could be considered as a "weapon"?...Thanks.
