History - Construction of the airport began in 1942 with modest ambitions. Only 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land on the site of Idlewild golf course were earmarked for use. The golf course provided the airport's original namesake, Idlewild Airport. First commercial flights began on July 1, 1948. The airport was formally dedicated as New York International Airport on July 31, 1948. It was re-dedicated on December 24, 1963 as John F. Kennedy International Airport, following action of the Mayor and Council of the City of New York, and a resolution of the Commissioners of the Port Authority. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, JFK was one of the first airports in the United States to be temporarily closed.

Airport flight times
I have been trying to call the number for JFK that the airline gave to me and the same lady has hung up and yelled at me twice now. I am just calling to find out the earliest planes can land at JFK? We are on the red eye out of Denver AND it is the same weekend as the time change. We were on this flight last year and were delayed an extra hour because JFK can't have planes land before 4am. The airline said to call JFK and they are being RUDE! Can anyone help me? Thanks!
Passport about to expire
Hi!
I am flying in December-January from New York to Manila,Philippines via Asiana Airlines and my passport is only good until March 2009 which doesn't make it 6 months to its validity. The Philippines Consulate will be issuing a letter instead and will renew my passport as soon as I land in Manila so that flying back to New York, I will be carrying a new passport. I called Asiana and they told me they will take note of it in my reservation but cannot guarantee anything. Any suggestions?
