JFK is completely non smoking but after going through customs you can exit the airport. Will have to go through security again when you reenter so you may be cutting it close.
Kennedy is small enough you can easily just exit the front door and there is a smoking station there.

What does a college kid do if the flight out gets cancelled after 5 hours of on and off plane, then told there isn't another flight out until the 24th. No cell phone, no money, can't get hold of mom or dad (because of no money) and can't get back to dorms (remember, no money)???
Depend on the kindness of strangers. Start chatting with someone friendly-looking at the airport and ask to use their cell phone to call your parents. If I was at the airport and you asked me to borrow my cell phone under your circumstances, I'd lend it to you with no problem!

i really hope flights wont be cancelled..i fly out of vancouver bc tomorrow night and get into ny jfk at 7am sunday! i wanna see my family for the holidays!!!!!! i doubt they will be cancelled but definitely delayed
