In many countries with a national Value Added Tax (VAT), you can apply for a tax refund on products purchased for use out of country.

The USA does not have a national VAT, and thus the tax cannot be refunded.

Local, state and city sales taxes are paid based on the district in which you purchased the product, and are not refundable upon leaving the district.

Just got back from NYC through JFK to discover several Christmas Gifts and valuable clothes have been stolen from my luggage - put nothing of value whatsoever in your luggage. Take it on board in carry-on luggage if you ever want to see it again!

I fly with Etihad from Abu Dhabi to JFK on the 18th. I arrive in JFK at 16.30 and need to catch a flight to Regan at 18.30 with American Airlines. As they are codeshare partners, do my bags still need to clear customs in JFK, or will they do that in DC? Also, do I have enough time to get across from terminal 4 to terminal 8?
Please advise,
A worried passenger!

They generally will check your bags until your final destination but you'll probably have to go through customs at JFK before connecting to your American flight. You should be fine on time but I'd let the airline know so you can try and get at the front of the customs line.

I have 8 1/2 hours connection time between two flights (both international). Would I have enough time to go into Manhattan for a couple of hours using the subway as transportation mean?
Thank you!

A recent study done by a UK company indicated JFK allows a noise limit of 99 DBA in residential area. Wanted to know if this is true or is this just the permitted noise level inside the airport ?

Hi, my AA flight arrives at JFK at 23.05hrs on the 15th of December. My onward flight is at LGA to leave at 06.55hrs on the 16th if December.
Can I still get an airport shuttle to take me from JFK to LGA? If I take a taxi, what time is a good time to set out to catch my 06.55 flight at LGA?
Any help will be much appreciated, thanks and God bless.

HI! Me and my brother have booked a ticket from JFK to DXB the 19th of December. We have a few questions regarding this. I'm not sure if I'm writing to the appropriate department but would be grateful if you could forward this to the right department.

We are Nepalese citizens living in the United States, one of us is a US resident and the other is a F1 student. We are travelling to Nepal but have 2 different airlines tickets. The first one is from JKF to DXB DEP 19th (Saudi Arabian Airlines) and ARR on the 20 of December 2009, then we have an onward flight from DXB to KTM on the 21st (Gulf Airways).

What we wanted to know is, do we need a Dubai visa in order fly out of JFK since we will be only inside the airport waiting for our onward flight. The main confusion here is they are not connecting flights. We spoke to Dubai internal airport and they said we do not need a visa since we will be in the airport and had an onward flight to a different destination and incase we wanted we were eligible for a transit visa on arrival through the airport.

I would really appreciate if you could help us find an answer to this.

Thank you.

You should definitely check with the UAE embassy and gulf airways. Nepalese citizens do need visa and unless you are US citizen (permanent resident doesnot work), it could land you in trouble. I will call Gulf air right now to see what they say.

Good luck !

I'm flying into JFK on Christmas Eve and scheduled to land at 1pm. I'm supposed to be somewhere in Midtown by 4:30, ideally having checked into my hotel first. Is this realistic, or am I kidding myself?

Thanks!

Hi there,

That should work if the weather isn't causing any delay.
It also helps if your hotel is on the way from the airport to whereever you have to be that day at 4.30

Just make sure you can get dressed at the otel in 5 minutes, because you won't have too much time ;-)
